Pronoun Practice
Part of Deeper Joy
Take aways may include: affirming you can do things that are hard for you, knowing that getting your pronouns right is worth the practice.
Parameters: at least 3 people. Can be done in person or online. If the group is large, you can break it into groups of 7 or 8 for time management and comfort.
Materials: In person: index cards with prompts written on them, scratch paper, writing utensils. Online: slides with the prompts written on them, scratch paper, writing utensils.
This exercise helps participants become fluent in using non-binary pronouns. Remind folks that it's not necessary to know all the possible pronouns, just to ask the person you're talking about what pronouns you should use in this setting (for safety reasons people may need to use different pronouns in different venues, like at work or school for example).
Pass out index cards to each person. For online, have people pick a random number then show a list of numbered prompts. Have them figure out complete sentences they could use the pronouns in silently and/or in writing. Then have them turn to a partner (or join a breakout room) to say the sentences aloud. Tell them if they mess up to not make a big deal out of it, just take a breath, say "sorry" and try again. This is another important thing to practice! Once they've each practiced a few times then have people say their sentences aloud to the group. Invite people to practice messing up and course correcting too!
