April 6, 2017 Letter from the UUA Moderator

By Jim Key

Yesterday I received a call from Harlan Limpert advising me of his intention to resign his position of Chief Operations Officer effective April 20, 2017. I accepted Harlan’s resignation with grateful appreciation for his contributions to our faith over the years. He announced his decision to the staff yesterday.

Upon Harlan’s departure, Sarah Lammert, Director of Ministries and Faith Development, will serve as Acting COO until an Interim President is chosen and can gather a leadership team as outlined in the Board’s Interim President Transition Plan. Sarah will report to the Moderator and Chief Governance Officer until new leadership is elected and installed.

We continue to be in a period of significant heartbreak and transition. We are hearing from our Sources of Authority and Accountability. The Board and I are striving to be as transparent as possible as we move forward. We have developed a draft Interim President Plan and Charge, which we will discuss at our April board meeting. The Board met last Monday night and will again tonight at 8:00 pm EDT. We will have a video platform that will accommodate 500 participants.

The Board continues to listen to our Sources of Authority and Accountability with a special focus on our Vision of Beloved Community.

As I have reported before, the board meeting on April 21 until April 23 will be livestreamed from this website so that you may follow the discussion. The agenda will be on the Board’s website on or about April 14 so you will be able to see the agenda and when each agenda item will be discussed. I encourage you follow these discussions and subsequent actions.

In faith and fellowship,

James C. Key (Jim)
Moderator and Chief Governance Officer
