Amoeba Tag
Part of Deeper Joy
Take aways may include: effort and pride in including everyone, feeling chosen
Materials: some kind of connector like strips of rope, cord or fabric (optional)
Parameters: more than 5 people, an open space
If using connectors, give one to each player. Two players are chosen to start and they hold hands or their connectors to form the amoeba. The amoeba approaches other players and absorbs them by taking their hand/connector. The game ends when all players have been absorbed. Players can choose to pass or pass for now.
Liturgical variation: do this while singing an opening hymn to gather everyone for worship.
Variation: players get absorbed by being caught in the middle of the amoeba’s circle.
Variation: make this a game of tag by having players not already in the amoeba avoid being absorbed. Ensure all mobility accommodations are addressed.
Variation: Once the amoeba has four players, it can split into multiple groups of even numbers. Amoebas can reattach to the main group at any time.
Variations: start with two amoebas. One amoeba can “eat” the other by forming a circle around all of its players.
