Congratulations 8th Principle Congregations!

In 2013, the UUs of Mt. Airy (formerly UU Church of the Restoration) in Philadelphia, PA became the first congregation to approve the 8th Principle. Since then, more than 223 congregations and affiliated groups (such as LREDA) have done the same. More than 70 congregations and organizations are in the Central East Region.

The 8th Principle is a grassroots building of support for an 8th principle for our UU Principles and Purposes. The text of the principle currently reads:

We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.

You can learn more about on the 8th Principle movement website. The 8th Principle is also being integrated into the revision of Article II. The draft language of the revision is currently available and the Commission is taking feedback.

We wanted to take a moment to recognize the congregations in our region who have approved the 8th Principle as part of their antiracism work and applaud them for taking this step. But the work doesn't stop (or even start) with passing the 8th Principle. Building Beloved Community is long term but joyful work. To help the Region will be offering a conference on February 25th titled So You Passed the 8th Principle... where congregations can learn from each other about how to move to their next phase of the journey.
