Covenant is a fancy word to mean promise. We make promises all the time in our lives & can be deeply hurt when they are broken. I wonder if the hurt could be tempered if we viewed covenants in a different light. What if instead of insisting a promise is made as an absolute, it is seen as a commitment to do our best.

Since we realized as a congregation it was inevitable we will break our covenant with each other, we made sure to put in the following phrase: When we fall out of covenant, we recognize, reflect, and re-engage.
