Ropes Course

Part of Deeper Joy

Take aways may include: Supporting each other to do hard things, honoring personal limitations, team work, expanding comfort zones, accomplishing something new.

Parameters: more than 2 people in person

It's possible to do a ropes course with a group of wide ranging abilities and bodies. Ask these questions before designing or booking an experience:

  1. Are the course entrances, pathways, and platforms and weight limits accessible for individuals with mobility challenges and large bodies?
  2. What adaptive equipment do you provide?
  3. What safety and accessibility training do your staff have?
  4. How do you accommodate medical needs during the course?
  5. How do you meet the communication needs of participants with hearing or visual impairments?
  6. May I visit the site in advance to discuss individual needs and accommodations?
  7. How do you gather feedback from participants regarding accessibility, and how is it used to improve the experience?

Preparing the group:

Remind participants:

  • To stretch the limit of what you think you're capable of while staying within your personal limitations for safety and security.
  • Everything is opt in/opt out. You choose/decide what you participate in.
  • The group's goal is do something together that they could not do on their own.

Debrief:

  • What did it feel like in your body to accomplish something difficult?
  • What did you do when you felt like giving up?
  • When was a time you felt your success depended on others/the group?
