Pins and Needles
Part of Deeper Joy
Take aways may include: building frustration tolerance in a collaborative environment, acknowledging the importance of different roles, accomplishing something hard together.
Parameters: 4 or more people, in person. With a larger number of people, divide into smaller groups of 4-5.
Materials: Something bendy (paper, pipe cleaners or string, etc.) something straight (skewers, popsicle sticks or straws, etc.) and something to use for fastening (tape, marshmallows or pins, etc.) from the craft/supply closet. Cards with the leadership roles on them.
The object of the game is to collaborate on making a structure. Before play starts, give everyone who wants one a leadership role to play with. Whether you choose to keep them secret or let everyone know will shift the way you play the game.
Some examples are:
Amplify everything the person to the right of you suggests.
Facilitate a decision making process with the group.
Lift up people who haven't spoken.
Make sure people know the barriers to accomplishing the task and any flaws in their reasoning.
Pay attention to how the work is getting done and who has power.
Make sure the project is completed by any reasonable means necessary.
Define what success looks like for the group.
Ask a lot of questions to get to the best solution.
Give the group(s) a set amount of time to build their structure (about 15-20 minutes). Afterwards, bring everyone together to share observations and reactions. Questions you could ask:
Who was the leader and how did you know?
What was the group atmosphere like?
How fully did everyone participate?
