Exploding the Covenant on the Wall
Part of Deeper Joy
Take aways may include: remembering why we covenant, thinking more deeply about things we take for granted
Parameters: good for groups for whom covenant making has become mechanic or boring.
Take examples of statements that usually end up on a covenant. For a youth one that might include things like:
- Don’t yuck someone’s yum
- The Vegas rule
- Croissants not donuts
- Respect
Then assign one phrase to each pair or small group and invite them to “explode” that phrase, meaning unpack it, take it apart and put it back together, or get to the root of the message. Invite them to ask themselves:
- What values does this phrase support?
- What would somebody miss out on or not get to do by following this “rule”?
- Who is being served by this phrase?
- Who is being left out?
- How might this phrase apply differently to people who have more or less power?
Then share out!
