Our Temporary Autonomous Zone
Part of Deeper Joy
Take aways may include: identifying concrete processes for practicing the group’s values
Parameters: good for groups who will be together over a longer period of time and are taking action together.
When a group forms a covenant, they create what anarchist writer and poet Hakim Bey (Peter Lamborn Wilson) calls a “Temporary Autonomous Zone,” a container where people can try on liberation practices and experiment with building new worlds together. It is an impermanent experience that can transform the ordinary into the extraordinary and inspire us to take what we experienced into our daily lives.
To form the covenant ask your group:
- What does this group value?
- How do those values guide how we treat ourselves and each other?
- How does the way we set up our space help us enact our values?
- How do our values guide our decision making processes?
- How do we navigate sharing power?
- What do our values tell us about when we mess up or make a mistake?
