Spectrum of Opinions

Part of Deeper Joy

Take aways may include: Sharing and being validated in opinions, space to open up to one another

Parameters: In person or online, 5+ people

Designate at least three options (agree, neutral, disagree) and assign a motion and sound to each answer. For example: If you agree, do jazz hands and hoot like an owl. If you feel neutral, shrug your shoulders and hum. If you disagree, give a thumbs down and click your tongue.

Say a statement, and allow time for people to respond. Optional: invite comments about why a person chose the answer they did.

Statements can range from silly to profound and can be broad or narrowed to a specific topic. Remind people there are no wrong answers. Start with “lighter” statements. Sample statements:

  • Pineapple belongs on pizza.
  • A hotdog is a sandwich.
  • I wish I could change something about the world right now.
  • I consider myself a Unitarian Universalist.
  • I lean on UU values to guide my life.
  • I am connected to people who care about me.

Variations:

In person: designate a location in the room for each opinion and have the group physically move to answer.

Online: utilize a whiteboard or poll tool to invite answers.
