Faith In Action 2: Are We Accessible?

Materials for Activity

Description of Activity

Participants evaluate the accessibility of the congregation’s meeting space.

Ask youth, “How accessible is our congregation?” Let youth share their observations. If further prompts are needed, ask, “Can you identify modifications made in the building or in services to make it more accessible? Can you identify modifications still needed?”

If your congregation has a committee or an individual working on accessibility issues, ask them to talk about their work. If no one is available, gather additional information to share from the UUA.org Congregational Accommodations for Disabilities or organizations that advocate for people with disabilities. Let youth use the checklist in Handout 1, Access Checklist for Meetings and Conference Planning, to evaluate the congregation’s meeting space. If deficiencies are found, discuss how the group will advocate for solutions. Follow through on any plans made. When your efforts are successful, celebrate them.
