Southern Region Congregational Life Staff

Nancy Combs-Morgan has been immersed in Unitarian Universalist faith development for 26+ years, including 6 as a Director of Religious Education, and 20 years on UUA district and regional staff. As a Congregational Life Consultant in the MidAmerica Region, with a focus in Lifespan Faith Development and Youth/YA ministries, from 2003-2022, she also began serving both the MidAmerica and Southern Regions. She now serves full-time on the Southern Region team. Throughout this progression she has remained passionate about the transformative impact of our faith for children, youth, and young adults.

She has worked closely as a regional representative on the UUA’s Faith Development Co-Lab and is active in supporting the UUA’s RE Credentialing program, including being a RECC mentor and is a Credentialed Religious Educator at the Leadership Level.

Outside of the realm of faith development, she radiates a love of music and spiritual deepening. She completed her certification as a Spiritual Counselor with the OneSpirit Learning Alliance in September of 2022 and is pursuing more opportunities in group spiritual direction. Nancy loves spending time with family and friends in her hometown of Lexington, KY.

Remember to…Seek ways to amplify and incorporate the voices of people of color in all aspects of congregational life. Centering voices of people of color helps to destabilize white supremacy as the dominant cultural norm in a UU setting and beyond.

For those of us who are invested in Unitarian Universalist faith development, what if we understood our mission to enable children, youth, and adults to be a part of a community which seeks to manifest more hope, more love, more courage, more justice, and more joy in the world?

I continue to be inspired by colleagues, particularly in the Southern Region, who for years, have been asking all Unitarian Universalists to consider that everything we do is faith development.

Twenty three years ago I began a journey of service as a Unitarian Universalist religious educator. I soon discovered the Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA). With clusters of religious educators, and my LREDA chapter, I found nurture, encouragement, and many opportunities for professional development.

As we seek to dismantle white supremacy, within our own institution, as well as the greater world, we must seek to be in relationship.

Building on the Southern Region’s guiding paradigm of a regional curriculum map, this new project partnership with the MidAmerica Region will provide support for the enhancement of faith development by providing coaching/companioning support for religious educators.

Leaders understand that processes, tasks and outcomes will not necessarily be the same next week as they were, and they remain agile in approaching situations and answers to questions and issues that arise in their work with congregations; they know that they have to be continually learning and asking “is this the best way to get what we want to achieve at this time?”

Leaders know how to work and play well with others; they understand it’s not about who is right, but how people can work together to ensure the best possible outcome in both task completion and relationship building/sustaining.

Leaders are networked in a couple of ways — first, they are aware of how community can be created, sustained, and nurtured through the use of technology; they realize that today on-line connection serves to deepen what a congregation can offer; second, they are not afraid of technology, and know how to learn through electronic means, and are able to find what they need, or find the person who knows, what they need moving forward.
