Our Whole Lives Facilitator Training for Middle School/High School will be offered at Berrien Unitarian Universalist Fellowship 4340 Lincoln Avenue,St. Joseph, MI 49085, on July 14-16, 2023, IN PERSON. While the trainers will set the exact schedule for this training and provide that to you closer to the event date, expect to be in training between 2 pm and 6 pm on Friday, 8 am and 5 pm on Saturday and 8 am and 3:00 pm, EST on Sunday. To be certified as an Our Whole Lives Facilitator, one must attend the entire training. Deadline for registration is July 07, 2023.

Trainers for this event are Kathleen Baldwin and Mark Huffman.

Please note these important points:

  • Age Minimums for live and online trainings: Participants must be at least 21 years of age to register for any training, and if working with teens, they should be at least four years older than the oldest teen in the program. We recommend co-facilitating with an older facilitator. This is a change from previous UUA policy, which set an age 25 minimum for the Elementary and Secondary trainings.

  • Training participants are responsible for purchasing and reviewing the most-current edition of the curriculum in advance and reading through it before the training. You will need your age level curricula and Sexuality and Our Faith. Do not buy or borrow a first edition of the 7-9 curriculum. They are out of date in terms of language and learning concepts. Please check with your congregation for which edition they may already have and/or purchase the current, second edition of 7-9 curriculum. A new edition of OWL 10 - 12 is in process. The bookstore is no longer accepting backorders for this edition. The new edition will be added to their site when it is available for pre-order. Trainers will provide everything needed for the 10 - 12 grade facilitators. Curricula can be purchased from the UUA Bookstore.

As UUs, we are committed to equity, justice and liberation. This includes protecting those in our community who are most vulnerable, and creating event spaces that can be welcoming to a wide range of people based on their risk or health status.

COVID-19 Guidelines for all UUA In-Person Events will be followed:

  • Participants and facilitators are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
  • Onsite attendees are required to be vaccinated and boosted, if eligible.
  • Masks are encouraged but not required in our indoor meeting spaces. Attendees will be welcome and encouraged to bring their own masks. Masks will also be available for attendees who need them, again provided by event organizers.
  • Testing before you travel is required. Event organizers will have rapid antigen tests on site, paid for by the individual event organizers, in the instance someone starts to feel unwell while attending. If someone tests positive at the event, they should notify the event organizers immediately.

We hope everyone will understand and embrace these guidelines in the spirit of the UUA’s values as a caring community.

Cost: $295.00 - See the registration form for details.

Our Whole Lives (OWL) is an excellent, comprehensive sexuality education program that offers our young people the opportunity to explore their values, gain accurate information about topics that are often not easily accessible. The overall goal of the Our Whole Lives program is to help participants gain the knowledge, values, and skills they need to lead sexually healthy, responsible lives. We are proud that our congregations recognize that in order for young people to grow into spiritually whole, mature individuals we need to address the topic of sexuality. The material on Sexuality and Our Faith connects our religious beliefs with sexuality, spirituality, and issues on justice.

Our Whole Lives teacher training covers the curricula for the one of three age levels - elementary, secondary (junior/senior high) or adult (includes young adult, adult and older adult). The goals of this workshop are to prepare the participants to implement the curriculum as well as the Sexuality and Our Faith component. Through a varied program including practice and participation activities, the trainers will cover implementation techniques, curricula details, and technical information.
