UN Sunday 2021 at Cedar Lane UU Church
Date: Passed: Sunday, October 24, 2021, All day
On October 24, 2021, Cedar Lane UU Church held its 9th annual UN service, dedicating a whole day for spiritual and intellectual challenge, renewal, and action. The Sunday morning service featured Dr. John King, former Secretary of Education in the Obama Administration (and currently a Democratic candidate for Maryland governor), who discussed promises that have been made to tackle the climate crisis and the progress we still urgently need to make. A discussion with Dr. King and members of the congregation was held at a special outdoor coffee hour following the service. The Sunday morning service also included a presentation by Cedar Lane youth climate activists.
Later on October 24, a UN Day Forum: Taking Action on Climate Change, was held between 4 and 5:30 pm. UU congregations in the Washington D.C. area and the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) co-sponsored this webinar to share insights from a range of leading experts on what we can do as individuals and faith-based organizations, locally and nationally, to meet the ambitious goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. Jill Christianson, Chair of the Board of the UNA-NCA; UU’s Tim Lattimer, Senior Climate Advisor of the State Department; and Nate Hultman, Cedar Lane’s Board President and on detail to Envoy Kerry's office at State Department, moderated a panel of activists, including William Barber III, Rural Beacon Initiative; Aly Tharp, UU Ministry for the Earth; Salote Soqo, UU Service Committee; and Doris Marlin, Washington D.C. All Souls member and leader of the UU delegation to the Glasgow COP26.
