Ian Zdanowicz is a 33-year-old trans man born in Poland. For the past decade he has been engaged in the struggle for LGBTQ and immigrant rights. While living in France, he worked for three years with OUTrans, an organization that fights for transgender rights. He organized workshops about sexual health and HIV; support meetings for trans people, their partners and extended families; self-defense classes; and fundraising events. Here in New York, he has been volunteering at the Queer Detainee Empowerment Project (QDEP) for the last two years. Since July 2017, he has been working with this organization as a case manager providing direct services to queer immigrants who are incarcerated in detention centers, as well as to those who require post-release support.
