Trans Etiquette
By UU Church of Akron, Fairlawn, OH
A team from the UU Church of Akron, Ohio created this series of teaching videos to help others learn how to avoid microaggressions and use clean language in their interactions.
1: Pre-emptive Apologies (6:41)
In this first of this series, we learn about well-meaning but poorly executed pre-emptive apologies. First we witness the behavior that needs to change, then we have a frank discussion between two trans activists (Bay and Rowan) about what we saw. Finally, we model the correct behavior, so you can see what to do in this situation.
2: Messing Up (7:38)
In this episode, we learn about what to do when we make a mistake. First we witness the behavior that needs to change, then we have a frank discussion between two trans activists (Bay and Rowan) about what we saw. Finally, we model the correct behavior, so you can see what to do in this situation.
3: Bathrooms (4:17)
In this episode, we learn about gender-neutral bathrooms and why they’re needed for even binary trans people. First we see a scenario from the point of view of a trans man trying to use the restroom. Then we have a frank discussion between two trans people. Finally, we see what it could look like to have gender-neutral bathrooms.
4: Outing and Deadnaming (8:24)
In this episode we talk about outing someone and/or deadnaming them. First we see what not to do, then we talk about it, then we see what to do.
5: Asking about Transition (8:06)
In this episode we find out how to respectfully ask someone their plans for transition, as in, “will you have the surgery?”. First we see what not to do, then a discussion, then an example of what to do.
6: Neopronouns (8:06)
In this final episode, we discuss how to use neopronouns respectfully. As always, we first see an example of what not to do, then a discussion, then an example of how to be more respectful.
