Fourteen Recommended Practices for Safety in Youth Ministry

UU youth huddle in a circle.

Learning from the best practices of many Unitarian Universalist congregations, the UUA Safety Team and Youth Roundtable have developed recommendations for congregations to keep teenage youth safer from harm. We invite you to explore the recommendations and resources in each of theseĀ areas:

  1. Hiring
  2. Screening
  3. Training;
  4. Supervision
  5. Communication
  6. Code of Ethics for Adults
  7. Participant Covenant for Youth Events
  8. Age Range
  9. Sex, Minors, and the Law
  10. Two Unrelated Adults
  11. Spaces for Pastoral Care
  12. Overnight Events
  13. Transportation
  14. Permission Forms

Members of the Youth Ministry Roundtable, Ministries and Faith Development, and Lifespan Faith Engagement (formerly the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries) spent the majority of 2018-2019 developing Association-wide Youth Safety Guidelines for UUA sponsored events. Questions about these guidelines should be directed to youth@uua.org.
