An Invitation From First Unitarian Church of Rochester

Welcome to First Unitarian Church of Rochester! Located in the Finger Lakes Region of New York, Rochester is the place to gather in fellowship with other General Assembly attendees this summer! We will offer all the important elements of the UU experience: opportunities to connect in large group and small group settings, singing, and pausing to breathe and “Meet the Moment.” Try Granny Annie’s wonderful cuisine at our coordinated meals (Potlucks!), and enjoy Cathy’s Coffee Crew’s delicious snack.

For visitors from outside the Greater Rochester Region we’ve got so much to offer in our historic city! We can also provide a list of local hotels, and we are working on the possibility of Home Hospitality.

  • The Susan B Anthony House
  • Mt. Hope Cemetery, with Susan B. Anthony’s and Frederick Douglass’ graves, among other historic figures
  • The Strong National Museum of Play, including a butterfly garden and The National Toy Hall of Fame
  • The George Eastman House
  • Seneca Park Zoo in a park designed by Frederick Law Olmstead
  • Multiple parks for connecting with nature
  • Genesee Country Village and Museum (nearby)
  • The Jell-O Museum (nearby)

YOU BELONG HERE!

A diverse group of congregants from First Unitarian Church of Rochester sit and stand together in a cozy meeting room, smiling and waving toward the camera during a casual gathering, with chairs arranged in a circle and musical instruments visible in the background, conveying a welcoming and community-centered atmosphere.

About the Space

Our local congregations and community are very excited to welcome you to our historic building! Built in 1964 by architect Louis Kahn, the church is spacious with a large amount of varied seating that still feels intimate for gatherings. Bring your coffee and snacks (we’ll have some, too). Bring your conversation. Bring your friendship and fellowship. The extensive garden areas that surround the First Unitarian Church were developed over the past thirty years largely through the efforts of the late Madlyn Evans. Volunteer gardeners provide the majority of the care of the gardens.

A view of the sanctuary space from the front of the room. Chairs are padded in grey and have arms. There is a rug on the concrete floor and textiles hung along the walls, which appear to be cinderblock. A choir loft and organ are visible above the seating area.

What’s Included Onsite

We will gather together to listen to and share songs of faith, community and resistance, will collectively engage in livestream viewing, and will share in facilitated conversations and meals to help us integrate our virtual experience in a community setting.

Parking and Transportation

We have a large free parking lot and bus stops nearby to explore our city.

Accessibility

We are equipped with step-free entry, elevator, and low stimulation rooms. Our single accessible family/unisex bathroom does not have the full square footage required to meet ADA standards, but otherwise meets the code. Hearing loops are available in the Sanctuary, Susan B. Anthony Lounge, and Williams Gallery.
