Intercultural Development Inventory

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is a tool for assessing and growing your multicultural competency, based in the Intercultural Development Continuum (IDC). The IDI begins with individual questionnaires, followed by one or more group workshops with a consultant as well as one-to-one meetings with the consultant.
The IDI emphasizes developmental growth and offers paths to engage more deeply and build one’s own intercultural competence. Its developmental approach is “low-judgment” and makes it clear that we all have something to learn. The online UU Institute program Co-Creating Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity in Our Congregations is based on the IDI.

Name | Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) |
Author | Milton Bennett, Mitchell Hammer |
Publishers | IDI, LLC |
Optimal group size | Can be used for individuals, and small-to-large groups. The IDI works best with a specific team within a congregation (e.g. staff team, anti-racism team, hospitality team) that is already engaged in the work of anti-racist multicultural transformation. |
Recommendations | The IDI is compatible with the UUA's Mosaic Platform but does not always emphasize an anti-racist power analysis. When you use it, share this video from Rev. Julica Hermann DeLaFuente as a supplement that brings together the IDI and anti-racist power analysis. |
How to access facilitators | To connect with Unitarian Universalist qualified administrators and facilitators of the IDI, contact the UUA MidAmerica Region, midamerican@uua.org. The IDI administrators/facilitators are required to be trained and certified by the IDI organization. |
Format | Online inventory, workbooks, 1:1 meetings, group workshops |
