I was tremendously grateful to learn more recently about the vigils that now mark March 1 as a Disability Day of Mourning.  This is a great way for the people who understand the horrors of this most clearly to gather and to share collective strength and grief.

As we mourn the disabled lives lost to caregiver and family-member violence, may we attend to the lives of those we don't yet understand.

Today we grieve for disabled people who have been murdered by the same people who should have loved and supported them: their family members. For me, a broader pain accompanies this grief, about how strong ableism is and how deeply it is engrained throughout our society.

As religious leaders, part of our work is to help our communities hold the tensions between different needs in the congregation, especially around worship.
