Custom Sidebars discontinued
How do we handle this update?
"Custom Sidebars Notice
Starting from version 5.7, WordPress will be using Gutenberg's block-based Widget Screen. Custom Sidebars is not compatible due to the fact that once Full Site Editing is in place, such plugins will not be required anymore. Therefore Custom Sidebars has been discontinued. If you have existing sidebars that you need to modify, you can switch back to a legacy Widgets screen by adding remove_theme_support( 'widgets-block-editor' ); in your theme's functions.php file. You can read more about this here."

It's too early to tell, but we are watching this. The beta version of WordPress 5.7 won't be available until February 2nd and the general release is planed for March 9th. When the beta is available, we'll see what we need to change in the theme.

I noted when I was working on a nonUU WordPress site that there is an experimental Pheonix theme that does include sidebars, as apparently most block editors do not and the theme developer wants to encourage other developers to include them. Here is the WPTavern link about it; it is not yet recommended for live sites: https://wptavern.com/phoenix-a-block-based-wordpress-theme-with-a-sidebar
It looks like the Classic Widgets plug-in restores the widget options:

Official plug-in to be maintained until 2022 or “as long as necessary”; disables block editor from managing widgets.
WP Tavern is an excellent site for keeping updated with all things WordPress:
