Mosaic Congregations
The Commission on Institutional Change’s report Widening the Circle of Concern recommended that the UUA develop a certification program similar to the Welcoming Congregation or Green Sanctuary program, emphasizing a congregational commitment to lifespan learning in diversity, equity, and inclusion and anti-oppression. After conversations with UU congregations at General Assemblies, in Meet the Moment Wave Cohorts, and at the 2024 Mosaic Fall Conference, our staff is putting final shape on the Mosaic Congregations program. We anticipate a launch before General Assembly 2026.
Write us for more information, or subscribe to our Mosaic newsletter to be notified when the program opens.
Mosaic Congregations Framework
Four Essentials of Beloved Community
- Congregational Transformation: Aligning governance, worship, religious education, and other aspects of institutional life with our deepest commitments to antiracism, multiculturalism, and embodying Beloved Community.
- Spiritual Care & Community Resilience: Centering collective and trauma-informed practices of care designed to address past and ongoing oppressive realities, while also fortifying our shared capacity to strive towards/as Beloved Community.
- Justice & Accountability: Engaging in community transformation efforts that are rooted in an interdependent understanding of shared liberation, mutual thriving, and frontline wisdom and leadership.
- Reparations & Redistribution: Calling for and practicing the redistribution of wealth, land, and institutional power to repair harm and build sustainable futures.
Five Approaches to Support Your Congregation
- Nourishing Our Team: Creating, nourishing, and sustaining your team is an important and ongoing process. Mapping out your people to strategize how you prioritize recruitment, relationships, and leadership development ensures a nourishing team culture, cohesion, and shared leadership.
- Grounding in Our Context: Understanding how different injustices are connected helps us more effectively identify the specific conditions we want to change. Together, you will explore the historical and current realities of oppression in your area and how those challenges will shape your Mosaic Congregation Goals and Actions.
- Reimagining Our Community Thriving: We must challenge ourselves to not just imagine baseline survival but also a flourishing, nourishing, and joyful future where everyone thrives. Together, you will identifyfaithful commitments that will guide our shared work.
- Exploring the Possibilities for the Four Essentials: Collaboratively reflect on each Essential for Beloved Community and brainstorm possible actions for this year and within the next five years.
- Mobilizing for Action: Drawing on your exploration of opportunities, work together to agree on long-term goals and short-term actions that build toward a thriving community.
One Requirement for Yearly Recognition
Once your congregation has completed at least one significant action for each of the Four Essentials, you will share your work by completing the Mosaic Congregations Action Report.
