Models of Sharing Administrative Talent

There’s more than one way to share administrative talent across congregational lines, and an administrator might even “mix and match” these approaches – for instance, serving as a part-time administrative generalist in one congregation while providing bookkeeping services to others. What might make sense for your congregation?

Generalist

A single employee can serve part-time at two (or more) congregations, covering general administrative responsibilities at each.

This might be a good option if you need an administrator on a part-time basis.

Specialist

A single employee can cover a specialized area of administration at multiple congregations.

Responsibilities that seem to lend themselves to this type of arrangement include bookkeeping, payroll and benefits administration, database management, and communications.

Interim

As with interim ministry, a congregation can hire an experienced administrator for a limited time, not only to cover regular administrative needs but to help set people and systems up well for the future.

We do not have a cadre of interim administrators available at this time. However, there are often recently retired or under-employed administrators who could serve in this way. See Getting Started.

Consultant

An administrative consultant provides limited-time guidance and training on a contractual (1099) basis.

This can be a good option if you have particular areas of concern.
