I n May 2011 President Peter Morales denounced Ugandan Anti-Homosexual legislation, characterizing it as an "unconscionable attempt to legitimize hatred and bigotry." (Read the full text of President Morales' statement here.) International opposition to this bill is cited as one of the primary reasons it was not voted on in the last session of the Ugandan legislature. However, the bill enjoys support from local Anglican support and last Fall the parliament voted to reintroduce the measure. For an African perspective on the issue read the following story, " U.S.- Africa Relations Put to the Test," by Mobhare Matinyi that appeared in The Citizen (Dar es Salaam). At a meeting of the African Union this weekend, Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki Moon, citing homophobic policies and attitudes that have gone unchallenged in Africa called upon African leaders to respect Gay rights. (Read the story here.) Stand-up for the inherent worth and dignity of every person: support President Morales' condemnation of homophobic legislation and attitudes.
