Young Adult and Campus Ministry Leadership Conference

This conference is for Unitarian Universalist young adult and campus ministry group leaders in the Greater Metro NY area, and all else who would like to travel and join. It will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock in Manhasset, NY and is accessible through public transit. There are two goals for this conference:
  1. Provide young adults in the New York area (and those willing to travel a bit) the opportunity to come together in fellowship.
  2. Provide training to leaders who are just starting groups, and those who have been leading for a while and are looking for a more advanced training.

We will begin at 6pm on Friday, February 8th and conclude in the early evening on Saturday, February 9th. Pick-ups and drop-offs from the train, as well as parking are available. Those who seek to to consult with someone about transportation can request to do so through the registration form (link below), or can contact any of the folks listed at the bottom of this page. We will provide dinner on Friday, and all three meals on Saturday. Lodging will be provided on Friday Night, with options to request information on affordable lodging for Saturday available on the registration form. Registrations are due Sunday, January 13th and there is no cost to attend this conference. A limited amount of travel scholarships are available. There will be two tracks available for this conference: 1. Young Adult and Campus Ministry Leadership for Emerging Leaders Spirit in Practice is part of the Tapestry of Faith series of faith development programs, and is available for free online. It is centered around spiritual practice through four strands: spiritual development, ethical development, Unitarian Universalist identity, and faith development. The curriculum's author is Rev. Erik Wikstrom, currently serving at Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church, and formerly the Worship and Music Resources Director for the Unitarian Universalist Association.This track will focus on small group facilitation, organizing a group, and effective advertising, with preparation to lead Spirit in Practice curriculum. 2. Young Adult and Campus Ministry Leadership for Experienced Leaders This track will focus on preparation and training to lead Building the World We Dream About for Young Adults curriculum, as well as training for organizing in the wider community. Building the World We Dream About for Young Adults is part of the Tapestry of Faith series of faith development programs, and is available for free online. It offers a process by which young adults can engage in honest and open conversations about race, better understand their own ethnic and racial identity and journey, and learn the practical skills they need to in their own lives right now as they make their way in an increasingly multicultural world. This curriculum's authors are Mark Hicks and India McKnight. India McKnight formerly served as staff in the Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries at the Unitarian Universalist Association, the Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist Congregation, and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Queens (New York). Mark A. Hicks, Ed.D. is the Angus MacLean Professor of Religious Education at Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago, and is the author of Building the World We Dream About for Adults, among other curriculums.
