Intern with an Outcome
Intern with an Outcome
I'm a lifelong UU, and in the summer of 2003 I came to Boston to earn my final term credits at Western Washington University in an internship at UU World, the quarterly magazine of the Unitarian Universalist Association. I'd never been to Boston before, but despite the unfamiliar territory and summer humidity, I fell in love with the city and with working at UUA headquarters, where I could feel connected to my faith in a tangible way. When the internship ended I stayed, and I have been here ever since. I'm now a senior editor and the magazine's internship coordinator. UU World continues to offer unpaid editorial internships for students interested in augmenting their academic program and expanding their publications portfolio. We've had some great experiences with past interns, learning from them as they learn from us. Our magazine has a small staff; there are only seven of us in the office, which is located on beautiful and historic Beacon Hill, in the heart of Boston. In addition to the print magazine, we publish a weekly online version of the magazine at and several blogs. The great thing about our office is that it lets interns try out all sorts of different roles, including writing, interviewing, fact checking, researching, blogging, and more. Most students join us for a summer internship, but we accept applications for internships throughout the year. If you'd like to learn more about our internship program, you can read about it on our website. You can also contact me with any questions at scohen [at] uua [dot] org">scohen [at] uua [dot] org.
