    • Motion to Reconsider CSAIs

As the Board of Trustees explained in today’s General Session, following yesterday’s discussion of proposed Congregational Study Action Issues, they received legitimate concerns about some miscommunications, mistakes and inconsistencies in the discussion of the proposals. In that vote, “Housing: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” exceeded the 50% threshold by 40 votes, which would make it our chosen CSAI for the coming years. If no CSAI had received a majority of votes, today would have had a second round of voting for the top two issues.

The approved GA rules of procedure provide a potential remedy for these concerns. Under Rule 3, the Moderator can allow procedural motions that are in the best interest of the General Assembly. In this case, the Moderator decided the most faithful choice was to entertain a motion to re-consider yesterday’s CSAI vote. Out of an abundance of care for the discernment required, the Board lifted up the power of the General Assembly itself to determine whether to re-do yesterday’s CSAI discussion and vote.

Thus, a motion to reconsider was added to the agenda in today’s General Session, was discussed by delegates, and will appear and on tonight’s ballot. If the motion to reconsider passes, the CSAI process will be discussed again in General Session IV and will be on the Saturday evening ballot. That ballot would use rank choice voting of the CSAI proposals to complete the required voting in the remaining schedule of GA.

This motion is available on tonight’s ballot. That ballot closes at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday June 21.
