Red Light / Green Light - consent edition
Part of Deeper Joy
Take aways may include: experiencing how giving and revoking consent feels in the body.
Parameters: More than 3 people, in person.
Materials: a green object and a red object
Choose one person to be “The Light,” and allow them to choose a stationary space to be – the front or middle of the room, behind a table, on tape on the floor for example.
The rest of the group spreads out to other spots in the room. When The Light points the green object at a person, says their name and says ‘green light’ the person begins moving towards The Light. The mover chooses the pace they move at. When The Light points the red object at a person, says their name and says “red light” the person stops. The Light can choose many people to be red or green at once. The Light chooses how close to their stationary place they want people to be.
After a few rounds debrief with the group. Questions could include:
- How did it feel to be told to go or to stop? What emotions or sensations came up?
- How did it feel to tell people to stop or go? What emotions or sensations came up?
- How did you choose what distance to have people stop at?
- How did you choose what pace to move at?
- Was a request ignored or not responded to quickly? What emotions or sensations came up?
