Public Witness: #LoveResists Rejoicing for Sanctuary & Solidarity, General Assembly 2017
General Assembly 2017 Event 344
Program Description
Get ready for a faithful and festive call to action! Across the country, people of faith and conscience are engaging through the Love Resists campaign to resist hate and fear and respond to today’s justice movement moment. In New Orleans, Unitarian Universalists will celebrate expanding the notion of sanctuary to help create safe spaces for all people under threat, and rejoice in the solidarity of working with community partners. Come for a distinctly New Orleans take on sanctuary infused with art and imagination, and get connected to the Love Resists campaign’s resources to bring home to your congregation.
The event will start with a brass band-led “second-line” style procession to the event site, a tradition established by black New Orleanians to express grief and celebrate life which has offered cultural resistance to systemic oppression for generations.
Here are three ways to join the event:
- Second Line (Onsite, 5:00 pm) - Join the traditional "second line" procession. Step off with the band at 5:00 pm at the plaza on the corner of Julia St. and Convention Center Blvd, the north& entrance to the Convention Center. The procession route is 0.6 miles, and will conclude at the Mississippi River Heritage Park for the program. Dress for the sun and bring a water bottle! The route will be on the street and is scooter-friendly. You can also join up later in the route if you want a shorter route.
- Event Program (Onsite, 5:20 pm) - Go straight to the program location in Mississippi River Heritage Park to greet the second line as it arrives. Come early to chat with one of the Love Resists organizers. The park location will be open starting at 5 pm, the band will arrive at roughly 5:20, at which time the program will begin.
- Live Stream (Online) - Watch the livestream of the event on this webpage. Portions of the event will also be streamed via the UUA's Facebook page.
The Love Resists campaign is co-sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.
