Statement by the Unitarian Universalist Association on the anniversary of the January 6, 2021, insurrection at the United States Capitol

Justice Gatson founded the Reale Justice Network in Kansas City, Missouri. Among other social justice issues, it focuses on ending the cash bail system, a national issue that disparately affects people of color.

The UUA offers support and solidarity to the powerful organizing happening in Georgia, especially from faith communities and Black-led organizations. We encourage UU across the country to organize to defeat voter suppression in their own states.

The UUA is compelled by events at the U.S. Capitol to call for true accountability and courageous action by national leaders in pursuit of a more just, equitable, multiracial and pluralistic democracy.

This is a time to remember our collective resilience and ability to protect each other, to defend democracy, and to organize unfailingly for justice, equity and dignity.

I return to the Spiritual Leadership practice of doing my inner work. It may be the hardest practice of all. I want so many things to be different than they are — including myself. Yet the only path forward is to be right here in this real place, right now at this real time.
