Developmental Minister Guide

Developmental ministry is for experienced ministers with skills and interest in assisting congregations move through their developmental goals.
Qualities suited to developmental ministry include:
- Self-differentiated.
- Trained in holding healthy boundaries and encouraging others to hold healthy boundaries as well
- Patience for—and deep understanding of—systemic, long-term adaptive change
- Being able to let the congregation struggle with the work they need to do without jumping in to fix things
- Pastoral responsiveness to a congregation’s complicated feelings after trauma or misconduct
Expectations of developmental ministry include:
- Use of outside resources as needed to adequately minister to the congregation
- Working closely in partnership with UUA regional staff
- A commitment for a 4-7-year term of ministry
- Complete a yearly assessment in partnership with congregational leadership
- Attend the UUA Year-long Transitional Ministry Training (YLTMT) if you haven’t already
- Ineligible to be called to the congregation being served
