Congregational Accountability After Negotiated or Conflicted Ministry Endings

Part of Ending a Ministry Well

After a negotiated or conflicted ministry ending, congregations are held in special care by UUA staff. Regional staff and the UUA Transitions Team will work with the congregation’s leaders to reflect on what led to the troubled ending and what is needed, before making plans to move forward.

This is a time to look at patterns of behaviors and dynamics the preceded the conflict, such as:

  • Was there poor communication?
  • Was there triangulation, where parties talked about one another instead of with one another?
  • Were roles, policies, or lines of authority unclear, or ignored?

Once the leaders have a clearer understand of their congregational system and the dynamics of relationship within the church, they can decide (with UUA support) what kind of ministry meets their needs.
