Build A Family Altar
Involve the entire family in creating a sacred space in your home by building an altar together.
It can be in a private, quiet corner, or in a common room where you often gather. What items can you bring into the space to invite sacred moments?
- Unitarian Universalist worship spaces often include a chalice.
- Place a chime if you wish to use the altar in meditation.
- A family member might use the altar to stay connected to nature and wish to add a seashell, driftwood, or an indoor plant.
- Someone might like to honor ancestors with a photo, for example, a photo from great-grandparents’ wedding.
- You can include items to remember faraway places that have mattered to family members, or members’ country of origin.
Putting something on your altar invites you to clarify your intentions. What item might remind you to be open to new experiences? What item can prompt you to notice beauty in your life?
Use soft music and soft light to create a worshipful atmosphere as you set up the altar together.
The Rev. Darcey Laine says, “For my altar, I look for things that have a feeling or color I like. I go with my intuition: “I don’t know what this sparkly thing means, but it makes me happy, so it’s going on my altar.’”
Remember, your altar gives you unlimited second chances: If it no longer feels right, you can change it.
