On Sunday, March 21, 2021, our intern minister, Stacey Mitchell, a United Nations Women's Representative, conducted a United-Nations themed service. Her sermon topic was "Beloved World Community." She wrote, "LGBTQ rights, hunger, violence, women's rights are issues that the United Nations addresses and are experienced by our own communities here in the United States. How do we contemplate the interconnectedness of our lives, as a world community?" She gave an overview of the activities of the UU@UN, established in 1962 and currently directed by Bruce Knotts. She discussed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, citing it as an alternative to nationalism, self-interest, and inequality. Stacey spoke eloquently of a loving God that interconnects us all in love -- "Love transforms what thinking may not," and "unconditional love does not have an agenda." The service included a powerful and moving video, featuring the Virtual Choir singing "In Your Hands." It featured a "slide show" that started with Eleanor Roosevelt and continued with shots of current Unitarian activism in Portland, and our U.N. Sunday Event of October, 2019.
