UPLIFT Access: Planning Accessible Ordinations and Installations

It’s never been more important to act with inclusion and solidarity than in these difficult times. The signs of systemic ableism are always around us, as they were last year. However, the recent, regular attacks on disabled lives have left me feeling the effects more than usual. When I’m feeling this sense of isolation, being invited to an accessible, inclusive event, one made with my access needs in mind, can make me feel a needed sense of community.

For many congregations, Spring is the season for ordination planning committees to organize, bringing various viewpoints together to create a meaningful ceremony for a new minister, their beloveds, and ministerial mentors.

The UUA’s “Ordination and Installation Handbook,” updated in the Fall of 2024, tells us:

Planning is a Form of Love Ordinations and Installations celebrate many different relationships–for example, between ordinand and congregation; between the congregation and its community; or between the congregation and our faith tradition as a whole. These occasions also strengthen longstanding and profound bonds of connection between the ordinand/Installee and their ministerial colleagues (and other religious professionals), whose attendance is often deeply meaningful for all. Unfortunately, some religious professionals and other guests have traveled long distances to celebrate a colleague’s ordination/installation–or to participate in one–only to realize that they can’t participate fully because the congregation’s building and/or the service itself weren’t accessible to them. A congregation’s thoughtful preparation for these accommodations communicates respect, inclusion, and hospitality: values we profess to uphold.”

The handbook goes on to provide guidance on organizing an accessible event for participants and guests. I encourage you to take advantage of this resource to assist your committee in creating an inclusive celebration that will bring a sense of community to all involved.
