HYMN: Greeting the Spring
(Text: David Ensley, Tune: ORIENTIS PARTIBUS, #243 in Singing the Living Tradition)

Sing of the EAST, the realm of AIR,
There gifts of sight and wisdom fair.
Dancing March breeze on this blest morn.
We celebrate the SPRING newly born.

Sing of the SOUTH, where FIRE burns bright,
There gifts of passion and ardent light.
Length’ning warm days on this blest morn.
We celebrate the SPRING newly born.

Sing of the WEST, deep WATER clear,
There gifts of health and love draw near,
Flowing with life on this blest morn.
We celebrate the SPRING newly born.

Sing of the NORTH, and strength of EARTH.
There gifts of life in joyous rebirth.
Springing up green on this blest morn.
We celebrate the SPRING newly born.

Sing of the LADY, and LORD of Green Wood,
Joyful Spring Maiden, and Shepherd Good,
Bringing us joy on this blest morn.
We celebrate the SPRING newly born.

Sing of the SPIRIT, Source of all,
Giver of life, to you we call,
Moving in us on this blest morn
We celebrate the SPRING newly born.

Leader 1: May the powers of the Ancient One,
Leader 2: the Spirit of Life, Source of all creation,
Leader 1: May the powers of the Goddess, bright lady of the moon,
Leader 2: And the God, horned hunter of the sun,
Leader 1: May the powers of the guardian spirits,
Leader 2: Rulers of the elemental realms,
BOTH: May the powers of the stars above and the Earth below bless this time, this place, and all who gather here.

I had a request for alternative wording to replace the binary gender language in the 5th stanza of the hymn. The gender binary is such a central part of Wiccan spirituality, pervading everything from deities/energies, to tools, to ritual elements, even roles in covens. It's unbelievably challenging to write ritual that doesn't rely on binary gender roles and concepts, as basic components of a ritual, e.g. calling the quarters and the Great Rite, are rife with gender polarity. Anyway, here is an attempt to replace some of the binary gender language in the text. Hope this helps. Bendithion Llachar!

Replace the 5th stanza of the hymn, sing of the LADY ... :

Sing in the Fields and dance in the Wood,

Joyful spring Child, and Shepherd Good.

Bringing us joy on this blest morn.

We celebrate the SPRING newly born.

Spoken prayer after hymn:

replace

"LEADER 2:May the powers of the Goddess, Joyful Spring Maiden,

LEADER 1:And the God, the dancing joy of the the Green Wood,"

with the following non-binary text:

"Leader 2:May the powers of the Shining Ones, the Joyful Child of Spring,

Leader 1:and the Dancing Life of the Green Wood"
