At a moment when so many legislatures are debating hateful laws, Unitarian Universalism affirms what is true yesterday, today, and every day: Trans people are divine. There is no such thing as other people’s children. We join together in fighting for a world in which all of us are free and thriving.

The UUA responds to the most recent onslaught of oppressive laws and policies threatening the lives of trans and nonbinary+ children and the LGBTQIA+ community and continues to work for justice and the ability of all people to thrive.

On the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v Wade decision that legalized access to abortion, Unitarian Universalists remain committed to reproductive justice, despite the changed legal landscape.

As this treacherous and tiresome year comes to a close, may these small victories bring you hope. May you remember that you are not alone. May you find comfort and joy in times of grief and sorrow. May you find the strength to persevere this journey of justice, peace, and equity.

While Unitarian Universalism honors diversity of genders and gender expressions, we know that transgender people experience harm in and beyond Unitarian Universalist spaces. These resources are available to ensure that transgender/non-binary people get the support and care they need.

The UUA supports the recently-passed Respect for Marriage Act and also emphasizes the need to go further in protecting the full rights of people across the spectrum of gender and sexuality.

Sharing my story helps others and me as well. It helps me heal from shame, re/connect with community, and with resources. Muslims, I believe must advance justice and equity, via deeds, words, even thoughts (e.g., challenging our own biases).

The increased attention to anti-trans legislation here in spring 2022 highlights this in many ways. Writer Lilah Sturges tweeted earlier this week, “Transgender Day of Visibility seems super unnecessary this year–they’re making laws against us all over the damn country."

Unitarian Universalists call ourselves the Love people.  We are working hard to widen our circle of concern. How can we, individually and together, change the attitudes that fuel filicide? This newsletter marks the UUA’s first public recognition of this Day of Mourning.

I was tremendously grateful to learn more recently about the vigils that now mark March 1 as a Disability Day of Mourning.  This is a great way for the people who understand the horrors of this most clearly to gather and to share collective strength and grief.

As we mourn the disabled lives lost to caregiver and family-member violence, may we attend to the lives of those we don't yet understand.

Today we grieve for disabled people who have been murdered by the same people who should have loved and supported them: their family members. For me, a broader pain accompanies this grief, about how strong ableism is and how deeply it is engrained throughout our society.
