Statement on Shooting in Oregon

The Rev. Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association, issued this statement following the news of the shooting at Oregon's Umpqua Community College:

"I am saddened and sickened to hear of the shooting at the Umpqua Community College in Oregon. I send my most heartfelt message of condolence and support to the families and friends of the victims.

Places of education and advanced learning are sacred spaces that should be protected and sheltered from violence. One cannot learn in fear. And as a society and a nation, we must do all we can to protect our young learners from fear and violence.

At the 2014 General Assembly, delegates passed an Action of Immediate Witness affirming congregational commitment to gun violence prevention. It is clear that greater controls on access to guns are desperately needed in this country.

We cannot wait when young people are dying in classrooms. Our lawmakers must act, and we must hold them accountable.”
