Boston, Mass. (November 20, 2024) – The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Board of Trustees has nominated three candidates for the elected position of UUA Moderator for a six-year term that will begin at the end of the Association’s General Assembly (GA) meeting in June 2025, where the election will take place. The elected candidates will take over the role from the current Co-Moderator Team of Charles Du Mond and Rev. Meg Riley, who have served in the position since June 2020.

Two of the candidates - Rev. Kimberly Quinn Johnson and Bill Young – are running as a Co-Moderator candidate team. Natasha Walker is running as an individual Moderator candidate. More information on the backgrounds and on the candidacies of all of the individuals running can be found at the UUA’s website.

The UUA Moderator serves as Chief Governance Officer of the Association, presiding at the Association’s annual General Assemblies and at meetings of the UUA Board of Trustees. Additionally, the Moderator represents the Association on special occasions and assists in promoting the welfare of the organization. Historically, the Moderator has been the most prominent and senior volunteer leadership role in the Association.

As part of shared values and longstanding principles, Unitarian Universalists support the use of inclusive democratic processes to make decisions within congregations, the UUA, and society at large. The Moderator is an elected officer that helps govern the Association, alongside the President and the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees makes nominations for the role of Moderator. Additionally, candidates may be directly nominated by petition between December 1, 2024 and February 1, 2025. Those running by petition must have 50 certified member congregations sign their petitions to qualify, including three congregations from five of the UUA’s regions.

Candidates for Moderator will campaign for office in the winter/spring of 2025, and the winner will be elected by congregational delegates of the General Assembly. The new Moderator or Co-Moderators will be announced at the 2025 General Assembly, which will be a multi-platform event held online and in Baltimore, Maryland from June 18 through June 22, 2025.

More information on the Moderator election and the candidates can be found at UU World and at the UUA website.
