Bridging: A Time Honored Unitarian Universalist Tradition

Two youth walk underneath the outstretched arms of adults creating a tunnel for them to pass through.

The Bridging Ceremony is a wonderful celebration of the herky jerky transition for our youth from teenagers into young adulthood. Huzzaaaah (Voice cracking)!

All kidding aside, if we want Unitarian Universalism to survive and thrive, it is essential for all of us to support this milestone, this transition, and to keep our youth connected to our faith, whilst maintaining a pastoral and supportive presence for them as they traverse the bumps, bruises, and boisterousness of young adulthood.

Resources for Bridging from Youth to Young Adulthood can assist folks as they engage in this ministry, as can TEAM, or The Emerging Adult Ministry, an intentional enterprise meant to foster continued connection of our bridged emerging adults to this faith that we love.

This spring, many congregations are planning for their respective bridging ceremonies, one of the most treasured and lovely traditions held all year and dearly beloved by many families and elders. Throughout, there is transcendent testimony from the youth, speaking of the impacts of Unitarian Universalism as well as the congregation’s positive influence upon their lives, as well as the wonderful witness born out by those in attendance.

This brand-new curriculum contains a “playlist” of resources and recommendations that we hope will prove useful as you look to support your youth and emerging adults as they engage in this closely held Unitarian Universalist tradition that we call “Bridging.”

Blessed be!
