Even though my blindness and anxiety disorder make them an extra-chaotic experience at times, I’ve kept going because of that renewed sense of strength and purpose that fills my veins when I connect with fellow activists who, like me, know we can change the world.

October 18th is International Pronouns Day Pronouns Education as ResistanceIn November 2016, I was reeling. Donald Trump had just been elected. He had wreaked so much destruction just in the campaign cycle, it was hard to imagine his term in office.

Join me this International Pronouns Day on October 18, 2023. Learn more and educate others about the importance of pronouns for trans/nonbinary folks, and for all people to offer more dignity and respect in and beyond our UU communities. Even seemingly “small” actions can generate great impacts.

Clearly, this year, Christian Theocracy and White Nationalism movements are emboldened. Hateful legislation is being proposed around the nation. The very act of “Coming Out” and “Being Out” is simultaneously more important, more transgressive and more dangerous than ever before.

In order to dismantle the systems of oppression that not only deny access, but also inhibit our bodily autonomy we must directly challenge the status quo.

Learn about inclusion and accessibility, and the importance of providing captions or sign language interpreters. Discover ways to promote the rights of deaf people and access to education and technologies. Understand that deaf and hard of hearing individuals are just as capable and able.

And my heart is full of resistance and boldness. I keep hearing the Emma’s Revolution song “Never Turning Back” in my head. These are heartbreaking times – but also defining times. And it matters how we show up.

At a moment when so many legislatures are debating hateful laws, Unitarian Universalism affirms what is true yesterday, today, and every day: Trans people are divine. There is no such thing as other people’s children. We join together in fighting for a world in which all of us are free and thriving.

As this treacherous and tiresome year comes to a close, may these small victories bring you hope. May you remember that you are not alone. May you find comfort and joy in times of grief and sorrow. May you find the strength to persevere this journey of justice, peace, and equity.

Sharing my story helps others and me as well. It helps me heal from shame, re/connect with community, and with resources. Muslims, I believe must advance justice and equity, via deeds, words, even thoughts (e.g., challenging our own biases).
