Bringing green living to our church and our community is the goal of our Green Sanctuary program. We work to reduce environmental impacts and climate change while increasing wellness.
Our program started with a focus on the church and our members. We: did an assessment, including performing an energy audit and recommendations; researched and shared actionable ideas to lessen impacts, reduce costs and increase wellness; educated members on broader topics; installed solar panels (SolarEdge | UUCNH); implemented many of the energy audit recommendations and plan to do more.
Our focus broadened to our community. We sought relationships with organizations working in the community to improve health and the environment while lending a hand to those in need. We evaluated where our skills, bandwidth and knowledge would help fulfill the needs people expressed and formed partnerships.
Ongoing partner organizations include: Homelessness Ends with Advocacy, Resources, Training and Housing (HEARTH), Allegheny County Clean Air Now (ACCAN), North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO), and North Hills Food Pantry (NHFP). We are exploring expanding our relationship with the Council on Three Rivers American Indian Center (COTRAIC).
