Deep Conversation on a Busy Day
As a congregation in an interim period, the UU Church of Silver Spring, MD, has an active Transition Team to help the Interim Minister facilitate conversations about heritage, connections, leadership, mission, and future. Conversations for Liberation checked many of these boxes. The Transition Team publicized the event in the newsletter, weekly email, and pulpit announcements. They also sent special invitations to the congregation's Racial Justice Task Force, as their feedback about what it takes for all of us to find liberation seemed important. On a busy Sunday during Advent, meeting at the same time as the Bazaar and pageant rehearsal, 18 members came together for a deep and insightful conversation. Participants found themes from the congregation's past and present, times when members have been proud and have felt the power of "we" in Unitarian Universalism; these occasions almost always happened as members were stretching their comfort zones to live their values. The future, then, seems to be in the same direction: Unitarian Universalism will fully realize the power of "we" through living our values in ways that stretch our comfort zones.
