Becoming a Safer Congregation A Guide to Effective Safety Policies and Practices

Our congregations strive to be safe and welcoming places to all. While it is impossible to make a congregation 100% safe, there are steps that you can take to support a safer congregation while still creating spaces for learning, growth, and challenge as well as actively working for the inclusion and safety of all people.

The sections below contain resources for congregations to prevent and address issues pertaining to the safety of individuals, of the community as a whole, and of your property.

Start Where It Makes Sense

Your congregation can build its safety policies and procedures over time. We recommend starting with those areas needing attention first, or which ones you might be able to address quickly or easily. For example, you might prioritize insurance and legal requirements (which vary from state to state), and them progress to another concern.

Use the Tools Provided

The sample policies, checklists, and suggestions contained here will help you take steps towards creating a safer congregation that lives our faith and values.

Revisit and Update

As you are completing your own safer policies and procedures, include a procedure that schedules when the documents are reviewed, so they are updated on a regular basis.
