James Vila Blake

The website of the Unitarian Church in Quincy, Illinois, where Blake served as minister from 1877 to 1884, offers this information about him:

A man of varied talents and of unusual energy and activity. He was a hymn lyricist and a poet with several volumes of poetry to his credit and several volumes of sermons. In 1896, he was mentioned briefly in this article from the New York Times. While he was minister at Evanston, Illinois [Church of All Souls], he penned the affirmation that we say during every service, and which has been adapted by many other Unitarian Congregations: "Love is the spirit of this church... "
