UU-UNO Sunday Report
Date: Passed: Saturday, November 4, 2017, 8:00 pm EDT
By Vicky Demos, UU-UNO Envoy
On November 5, 2017, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Salisbury celebrated UU-UNO Sunday with its program, UU-UNO Sunday: Making a Local-Global Connection for Peace. The worship associate was Shane Blaz who read several passages about peace and disarmament including a selection from the writing of Dag Hammarskjôld. The collection was made for the UU-UNO.
The speaker was Vicky Demos who spoke about the founding of the United Nations as an institution dedicated to world peace. The talk began with the story of Sedako, a Japanese girl. Sedako was two years old and living in Hiroshima in 1945 when the U.S. dropped the bomb there. When she became ill with radiation sickness, she began making paper cranes believing according to a legend that if she made a thousand of them she would be granted a wish. She died before reaching her goal, but the making of paper cranes has come to symbolize hope for global peace. The rest of the talk focused on the United Nations and the Unitarian Universalist connection with the UN and its work on the international, national and local levels. Three relevant UN disarmament developments were discussed: 1. The General Assembly UN conference decision to negotiate a legally binding instrument to prohibit nuclear weapons. 2. The Iran nuclear deal and 3. the UN’s decision to follow a diplomatic path in dealing with the threat posed by North Korea. At the end of the talk, paper cranes were distributed and the congregation was invited to join the UU-UNO.
