2008 Recipient: Mount Vernon Unitarian Church, Alexandria, VA
Mount Vernon Unitarian Church (MVUC) has an active and robust social justice program, focusing on affordable housing, civil liberties, green sanctuary, repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and women’s reproductive rights. Approximately fifty percent of the congregation is involved in social action work, including Young Religious Unitarian Universalists (YRUU), Junior Youth Group, RE children, newer members, regular friends and visitors, and long-time members of the congregation. Activities ranged from advocacy, outreach, services, and education in the local, state and global communities.
