The Commission on Institutional Change
The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) Commission on Institutional Change is charged with supporting long-term cultural and institutional change that redeems the essential promise and ideals of Unitarian Universalism. Appointed by the UUA Board of Trustees in 2017 for a period of two years with an extension granted in 2018, the Commission was in place through June 2020.
Over the three years, the Commission on Institutional Change shared regular communications through The Institutional Change Blog. The Commission curated discussion guides, videos, and presentations for congregations, fellowships, covenant circles, and other forms of community to engage in the work of institutional change. These resources are substantial materials to support the final work of the Commission, Widening the Circle of Concern: Report of the UUA Commission on Institutional Change, presented to the Board of Trustees and General Assembly in June 2020.
Visit the Widening the Circle of Concern page to learn more about the Commission, its members, and the final findings. The Commission on Institutional Change requested personal accounts and stories about how racism has affected individuals and groups within Unitarian Universalism at the personal, institutional, or systemic levels. Transcripts of the testimony, focus groups, and individual interviews—over 650 pages of transcripts and eighty plus hours of audio/video interviews—were analyzed using Dedoose, a cross-platform research application for qualitative data.
