• Chalice and LED/battery-operated candle
• Newsprint, markers, and tape

Preparation for Activity

• Write the chalice-lighting words on newsprint, and post.

Description of Activity

Gather participants in a circle around the chalice. Welcome new participants. Welcome back those from previous sessions. Review names as appropriate.

Light the chalice, or ask a volunteer to light it. Invite participants to join you in reciting the opening words:

We light this chalice

As we are change, changing.

We know that we and the whole world around us

Are growth and flux and flow,

Always.

Extinguish the chalice.

Including All Participants

To include vision-impaired participants, lead the group through the opening words as a responsive reading, one line at a time, and have the group repeat each line after you.
