Faith CoLab: Tapestry of Faith: Gather the Spirit: A Multigenerational Program about Stewardship

Alternate Activity 1: Water Drop Competition

Activity time: 10 minutes

Materials for Activity

  • Plastic cups
  • A pitcher of water
  • Food coloring
  • Eye droppers or spoons
  • Wax paper
  • Straws
  • Newspaper or tarp to cover floor

Preparation for Activity

  • Prepare an area where participants can safely have fun with water. Cover any carpet or other vulnerable surface with a tarp or newspaper.
  • Cut equal size sheets of wax paper - one per team
  • Fill the pitcher with water. Use the food coloring to color the water.

Description of Activity

Use this activity as a more active replacement for Activity 4, Spiritual Circle of Thanks. Form small teams of equal numbers, ideally two or three each.

Explain that teams will compete to be the first to blow a colored drop of water back and forth across a sheet of wax paper using a straw. Place the lengths of wax paper parallel to each other on the floor or a table. Fill a cup with water for each team. Give each team an eye dropper or spoon. Ask teams to divide up so approximately half their members are on either side of the wax paper. Hand a straw to each participant.

Tell teams to place a drop of water at one end of the wax paper, and decide the order in which its members will blow the drop.

When all are ready, say "Go" and let the teams start blowing the water back and forth. The team that finishes first wins the prize-a chance to clean up first.

Including All Participants

If anyone would not be comfortable on the floor, set up the contest on a table with all participants seated.
